Waterworld : la version longue en dvd
Universal vient d’annoncer en Zone 1 la sortie d’une édition 2 dvd de Waterworld pour le 4 novembre. Outre le montage cinéma (2h16), sera présent la version longue (2h57) considérée officieusement comme le Director’s Cut de Kevin Reynolds. Produite pour la télévision américaine dans les années 90, ce montage inclut près de quarante minutes inédites par rapport au montage cinéma. Souvent appelé le Ulysses Cut, car on y apprend le nom du Mariner (Kevin Costner), le rythme de cette version se trouve nettement amélioré et plusieurs scènes enrichissent l’histoire.
Voici le descriptif des scènes ajoutées :
- After the Mariner’s capture at the Atol, the inhabitants of the Atol examine his belongings. Among them they find a ThighMaster, which they believe is an assassin’s weapon used to strangle people, and a flute, which they think is used to distract an opponent.
- A scene that explains where exactly the Mariner got the jetski he uses to reach the Deacon’s ship to rescue the little girl. The survivor’s of the Atol massacre are ambushed by 2 of the Deacon’s men on jetskis, the Mariner kills both men and takes their weapons and one jetski.
- A scene that shows how Gregor managed to find Helen and the Mariner after their boat was burned down. ( He followed the smoke. )
- At least 10 minutes worth of new scenes that further detail life aboard the Deacon’s ship. Including how they obtain their cigarettes and other equipment.
- A scene that reveals that the two skeletons found in the shack near the end of the movie are indeed the girl’s parents instead of just letting the audience guess it.
- Scenes that show the Mariner building the new boat he uses the leave the island at the end of the movie.
- For the first airing on ABC which restored footage cut from the film, we see Helen and Enola standing atop the cliff watching the Mariner depart before the films end credits. As they are standing there they uncover a plaque which tells us that they are at the peak of Mt. Everest. This scene was not shown in the re-broadcast.
Ce montage n’est pas inédit en France. Il est passé au début en 2000/2001 sur Ciné Cinémas, en VOST d’après un master plein écran, télévision américaine oblige.
La publicité pour la diffusion de Waterworld, version longue, en France
Le dvd est annoncé avec un master 16/9 inédit pour cette version Par contre, il s’agira d’une version censurée au niveau de la violence et du langage, comme tous les montages destinés à la télévision. Le montage TV de Dune, paru également en dvd chez Universal, avait aussi ce problème, malgré ses 35 minutes inédites.
Pas de Blu-Ray annoncé.

Ray Harryhausen : nouveau livre
Archive Editions sort en septembre un nouveau livre sur Ray Harryhausen, premier volume d’une trilogie consacrée à l’artiste. L’éditeur publie d’abord le volume 2 qui se concentre sur les premiers films américains. l’éditeur explique ce choix ainsi :
Many of our consultants who reviewed the manuscript for factual accuracy commented that, while the contents of Volume One (Ray’s early years, The Fairy Tales, The Puppetoons, etc.) were enjoyable and informative, they were anxious to get to “the good stuff” —i.e., the feature films. Buffy : le pilote de la série animée
De 2001 à 2004, Joss Whedon et son équipe travaillent sur une série animée, dérivée de la série Buffy contre les Vampires. Mais si Buffy et son excellent spin-off Angel rencontrent un énorme succès, la série animée, jugée trop adulte par les chaînes américaines, ne sera produite. Seul subsiste un pilote de quatre minutes qui a fait son apparition au début du mois d’août sur Youtube.

Rashomon restauré
Le site ScifiJapan nous apprend que le Rashomon de Kurosawa vient d’être soigneusement restauré par Lowry Pictures aux Etats-Unis. est en cours de restauration intensive. Et cette restauration. Une nouvelle copie tirée de cette restauration 4K va être présenté en septembre dans un cinéma de Los Angeles.
A ne pas confondre avec King Kong !
C’est l’un des pires rip-offs du King Kong de Dino De Laurentiis. King Kong revient (ou King Kong se révolte en Belgique) avait déjà été édité en Zone 1 sous le titre A*P*E mais l’éditeur allemande va proposer le 26 septembre la version en relief du film, A*P*E ayant été tourné en relief à l’époque. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas ce film, voici la bande-annonce haute en couleurs, où l’on apprend que Kong détruit notamment la ville de Metropolis. (Mais que fait Superman ?) et la mention finale : A ne pas confondre avec le film King Kong !

Et voici deux extraits où Kong se bat contre un requin visiblement plus très frais, et contre des hélicoptères Playmobil. Le dernier plan du second extrait nous montre un Kong faisant un doigt d’honneur. Anthologique.
Holocaust 2000 : la fin inédite en France
LionsGate sort l’excellent Holocaust 2000 d’Alberto di Martino, connu aux Etats-Unis sous le titre The Chosen, et en vidéo sous le titre Rain of Fire. C’est d’ailleurs ce dernier titre que l’éditeur américain a retenu pour cette sortie dvd. Kirk Douglas y incarne un riche homme d’affaires, en lutte avec des prophéties apocalyptiques, dans ce qui constitue l’un des meilleurs rip-offs de La Malédiction (1976), soutenu par l’excellente composition d’Ennio Morricone. Reste à savoir quelle fin sera retenue dans cette édition dvd. Dans celle vue en France, Angel Caine (Simon Ward), le fils de Douglas, assiste à son premier conseil d’administration comme nouveau dirigeant, annonçant que la centrale nucléaire sera terminée à temps pour son 33ème anniversaire. Cette scène est suivie par celle où Robert Caine (Kirk Douglas) vit avec sa femme et son bébé en Afrique du Nord, semblant attendre la fin du monde.

Une autre fin fut tournée et montée, montrant d’abord Douglas et sa petite famille, avant la scène du conseil d’administration. On y découvre un Douglas moins résigné, se rendant à Genève pour tuer son fils.

Daniel Farrands, scénariste d’Halloween VI et éditeur du livre Crystal Lake Memories travaille sur un documentaire intitulé His Name was Jason sur la saga vendredi 13. Il sera diffusé en février 2009 en même temps que la sortie salles du remake. Une édition dvd est prévue par la suite.
Titanic : le documentaire inédit
Lors de la conférence de presse annonçant la sortie de l’édition spéciale DVD de Titanic en mars 2005, fut dévoilé une partie des bonus qui allait composer cette sortie.
Ed Marsh, déjà responsable de l’excellent Making of d’Abyss, avait filmé près de 400 heures du tournage, et allait proposer un documentaire définitif sur la longue et difficile production du film, pièce centrale d’une édition 4 DVD définitive.
Selon les déclarations de James Cameron et du producteur John Landau (voir photo), le documentaire allait nous emmener du pitch écrit par Cameron pour convaincre la Fox, jusqu’au triomphe public et critique du film, en passant par les nombreuses difficultés et tensions qui ponctuèrent ce tournage pharaonique. Mais les caractéristiques techniques définitives des suppléments, dévoilés quelques mois plus tard, ont mis le documentaire aux abonnés absents. Il ne sera au final pas intégré aux éditions 3 DVD américaine (Paramount), et édition 4 DVD européenne (Fox). Même si aucune raison officielle n’a été donnée à l’époque, il semble que ce soit James Cameron lui-même qui ait mis son véto sur cette sortie.
Aujourd’hui, le forum Hometheaterforum a ouvert ses pages à plusieurs producteurs dvd prestigieux comme Van Ling, responsable de tous les dvd des films de James Cameron.
Il revient sur ce documentaire lors d’une conversation avec un internaute :
Van Ling : For Titanic, the official word is that JC wanted to wait on doing the documentary until Leo participated, since he was obviously a big part of the film and was not able to come in for any interviews or commentary in 2005.
L’internaute : What I understood was, that the “Titanic”-documentary was more or less “done”, but then dropped for some reason (or several reasons) in the last minute. But of course, I could be wrong. The rumors were kinda indicating, that perhaps the documentary was “too revealing” or something – and not always in the positive way. I fully understand the “Leo”-part, but perhaps that was not the only reason…
Van Ling : That’s why I said it was the OFFICIAL word.
Concernant la sortie avortée d’une édition spéciale de True Lies, Van ling revient également sur les circonstances de son annulation, confirmant ce qu’on supposait déjà, suite aux événements du 11 septembre.
Van Ling : I was actually just getting started on doing something for “True Lies” when 9/11 happened, and at that point the project was put on indefinite hold due to the uncertainty of things at the time… there was a concern about the domestic terrorism angle, especially since the climax involves a nuke in a downtown skyscraper, as well as the scenes of “terrorist slapstick” in the van on the bridge. None of this concern affects either the film or its disc, but the thought was that a) it would be hard for interviewees to talk about the film in the correct tone and context so close to the event –it might seem insensitive talking about how fun it was to make a terrorist-themed comedy with the real-world events going on at the time, and b) the release of the DVD in that year’s timeframe might come off as exploitative opportunism at best and incendiary jingoism at worst (see South Park’s “Cartoon Wars” for a great take on fear of retaliation). We know now that probably none of these concerns would have been warranted, but it’s true that at the time, we all knew that if nothing else, the film itself would get overshadowed by everything going on around it. So it’s been on hold ever since, and again, JC has to approve a new transfer and such, so that’s been holding things up as well. I don’t think he has any problem with the context these days. I was told by someone at one point not too long after 9/11 that the film was more popular than ever, since it showed us winning out over the bad guys.
Iron Man : scène coupée en ligne
Le dvd et le Blu-Ray ne sortent qu’en octobre mais Access Hollywood propose en ligne depuis quelques jours une des scènes coupées qui figureront dans les suppléments.
Le site Slash Film en fait une bonne descrpition :
he three-and-a-half minute sequence shows what happens when Tony Stark wants to throw a last minute party at his house in Dubai. This sequence gives an answer to a plot hole some had, because Stark can’t fly from California to the Middle East in the suit, as it would be technologically impossible. There is also a cameo from Ghostface Killah. For those who don’t know, the members of Wu Tang are supposedly big comic book fans, and one of Ghostface Killah’s aliases is “Iron Man” and sometimes “Tony Stark”. The scene also provides Stark with an alibi for his work in the Middle East incident. Essentially, this is the yacht scene from The Dark Knight, but not done as well. But at the end of the day, like most deleted scenes, you can easily see why it was cut.
Psychose : une poignée de secondes inédites
Alors que les studios Universal sortent aux USA une nouvelle édition collector du film le 7 octobre, la chaîne allemande RTL a surpris tout le monde en diffusant durant le mois de juillet une version inédite du film, qui pourrait bien être le Director’s Cut du film.
Dans le Making of du film qui figure sur les dvds, il est évoqué les problèmes qu’a eu Hithcock avec la censure, notamment lorsque Marion (janet Leigh) enlève son soutien gorge. L’intégralité de la scène était d’ailleurs visible dans le Making of et se retrouve aujourd’hui dans le montage du film.
Mais le montage présenté par RTL contient également d’autres ajouts lorsque Norman Bates se lave les mains, ainsi que deux coups de couteau supplémentaires lorsque Milton Arbocast est tué.

Il est peu probable que l’édition collector du 7 octobre comprenne ce montage inédit.
Paradoxalement, dans les années 70, lorsque le film est ressorti au cinéma, la publicité et les affiches mettaient en avant le fait que le film était en version intégrale au cinéma, alors que la TV américaine avait pris l’habitude de censurer la quasi intégralité de la scène de la douche.
