In the 22nd Century, the United Earth Federation has begun colonizing neighboring planets in the solar system. While attempting to extract water from Mars’ polar ice caps, a UEF science team uncovers ancient carvings that describe the crash of an alien spacecraft on the planet Jupiter several millennia ago.

The discovery postpones the initial phase of the Jupiter Solarization Project, a plan to transform the gas giant into a second sun, providing both additional solar energy for Earth and making the outer worlds fit for colonization. From Minerva Station in the orbit of Jupiter, Dr. Eiji Honda (Tomokazu Miura, Survive Style 5+, Taste of Tea) is dispatched to ensure that alien life does not exist on Jupiter before the planned mission is to commence. When scientists discover that a black hole is approaching the solar system, Earth’s only hope is to abandon the Solarization Project and instead send Jupiter into the black hole. Dr. Honda must race to complete the new mission and save Earth before time runs out!

Enticed by the success of Star Wars, Toho decided to give Japan a space epic of their own. Emulating cinematography and special effects techniques pioneered in Star Wars and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, Sayonara Jupiter debuted in 1983 and became one of Japan’s biggest blockbuster hits of the decade. Directed by Koji Hashimoto (Godzilla 1985) and featuring stunning special effects by Koichi Kawakita (Gunhed, Godzilla VS King Ghidorah), Sayonara Jupiter has maintained a devout cult following and inspired countless special effects creators worldwide!

The Fearmakers Collection

They are considered the true masters of horror, with directing careers that span nearly a century. From “Dracula” to “Cat People,” “The House on Haunted Hill” to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” these illustrious luminaries literally created a film genre. Their fascinating careers and iconic films are showcased in “The Fearmakers Collection,” a three-disc, 10 episode series highlighting some of the world’s greatest makers of classic horror and suspense films. The set will be available from Elite Entertainment on May 8th at a suggested retail price of $29.98.

“Never before have horror fans had the opportunity to hear stories of the horror genre’s greatest directors, all in one complete DVD set,” said Vini Bancalari, President, Elite Entertainment. “From interviews with some of the directors themselves, to the talent featured both in front of and behind the camera, and those that were inspired by these filmmaking giants, ‘The Fearmakers Collection’ will undoubtedly become a mainstay of any horror film collection.”

Each disc in “The Fearmakers Collection” set highlights an array of interviews with directors, producers, actors, writers and critics that have made their mark in the horror and suspense film field. The half hour episodes feature the careers of:

Jack Arnold—Known for his exotic settings and master of the 3-D shock effect, Arnold’s resume includes such classics as “It Came From Outer Space,” “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” and “The Incredible Shrinking Man.”

Tod Browning—Renowned as the director of the original “Dracula” (1931), Browning also made his mark in the horror world with “Freaks,” “Mark of the Vampire” and “London After Midnight.”

William Castle—The master of the promotional “gimmick” (such as attaching vibrating devices to theater seats), Castle directed such popular ‘50s films as “The House on Haunted Hill,” “The Tingler” and “Macabre.”

Roger Corman—Having set a record for the shortest amount of time to shoot a professional feature film (two days, one night to film “Little Shop of Horrors,” which featured a young, unknown Jack Nicholson) Corman went on to have an illustrious career with such films as “It Conquered The World,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Raven.”
Terence Fisher—Fisher got his big break at the age of 52 with “The Curse of Frankenstein,” a shocker that set a new standard for modern horror films. His other works include “Horror of Dracula,” “The Hound of the Baskervilles” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Tobe Hooper—Perhaps no modern-day director is more associated with one film than Tobe Hooper and the original “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”

Roman Polanski—Considered a cinematic master of many film genres, Polanski set a high-water mark with his riveting work directing “Rosemary’s Baby.” His other notable horror-themed projects include “Repulsion,” “The Tenant” and the horror/vampire spoof “The Fearless Vampire Killers.”

Jacques Tourneur—French filmmaker Tourneur got his big break in 1942, when noted producer Val Lewton started up the new horror unit of RKO and assigned Tourneur to direct its first picture, “Cat People.” Other works include “I Walked with a Zombie,” “The Leopard Man” and “Curse of the Demon.”

Roland West—Though his directing career was short lived, West was known for such atmospheric, moody horror films as “The Bat,” “The Bat Whispers” and “The Monster” and remains even better known for a real life murder case in which he was a suspect!

Robert Wise—While he’s best known for directing such movie musical classics as “West Side Story” and “The Sound of Music,” Wise is immortal to horror fans as the architect of such genre classics as “Curse of the Cat People,” “The Body Snatcher” and “The Haunting.”

Each episode of “The Fearmakers” also features interviews with a variety of talent connected with these movie masters and the horror film world, including: John Agar, Samuel Z. Arkoff, Dario Argento, John Carpenter, Jeffrey Combs, Joe Dante, Stuart Gordon, Richard Matheson and David J. Skal.

The DVD set is based on the popular book “The Fearmakers,” by John McCarty, who is co-producer, co-director, co-writer, co-editor and narrator of the series. The book profiles about 20 classic horror and suspense film directors (including the 10 featured in the DVD collection).

Trailer THX Shrek enfin visible

Monster’ play? THX pulls Shrek
By Josh Spector

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) — What promises to be an entertaining battle royal between the green ogre “Shrek” and the nightmare beasties from “Monsters, Inc.” appears to have claimed its first casualty — a Lucasfilm THX promotional trailer that has been scrapped at the eleventh hour.

PDI/DreamWorks’ “Shrek,” the summer smash, and Pixar/Disney’s “Monsters, Inc.,” which opens Friday, are preparing to square off, with the CG-animated features likely to end the year duking it out for boxoffice bragging rights and competing for Oscar glory in the new animated feature category.

But first, Shrek was to have made a surprise appearance in a THX promotional trailer thanks to an agreement between THX and DreamWorks. But THX had a mysterious last-minute change of heart, shelving the trailer and igniting suspicion that Pixar and the Walt Disney Co. might have blackballed it.

In June, DreamWorks marketing staff contacted THX executives and pitched the idea of utilizing “Shrek” characters in one of the company’s trailers, which have become a staple of multiplex preshows. While there was not much precedent for such a collaboration — though THX had used characters from television’s “The Simpsons (news – Y! Tv)” — THX jumped at the opportunity to use the popular Shrek character in conjunction with its logo. The only stipulation THX laid down was that the trailer not promote “Shrek” in any way beyond the use of its characters.

The deal called for DreamWorks to develop and produce the 30-second spot, picking up its $70,000 cost, and for THX to distribute the trailer on 1,156 domestic screens and 1,248 international screens. It was to be released Nov. 2, to coincide with the “Shrek” video release — and, coincidentally, the theatrical debut of “Monsters, Inc.”

THX was delighted with every step of the trailer’s development. Correspondence between the companies reviewed by The Hollywood Reporter reveals THX executives commenting that the storyboards and an early version “looks and sounds great,” and that the Lucasfilm company was “looking forward to finalizing everything.”

THX was so impressed with the trailer that it hoped to include it on the consumer DVD deo disk distributed to THX-licensed manufacturers in order to showcase the technology. A THX executive even wrote that the company planned to include an article in its corporate newsletter on “both THX’s involvement with ‘Shrek’ in Digital Cinema and our involvement on the new trailer.”

On Oct. 5, with the trailer completed by DreamWorks, THX told the studio how many copies it would need and promised to ship the spot during the week of Oct. 29.

But that was not to be. On Oct. 15, only 10 days later, the company informed the studio that it no longer wanted to distribute the trailer. The about-face left DreamWorks stunned.

“We were extremely surprised due to their overwhelming enthusiasm for the idea from the very beginning,” DreamWorks marketing chief Terry Press said.

So why did THX suddenly scrap the Shrek trailer, which the company had pursued enthusiastically for months?

One scenario: Pixar was alerted to the existence of the trailer when several DreamWorks craftsmen, working on the trailer at the THX sound facility at the Lucas Ranch in the Bay Area, bumped into several Pixar players. Pixar executives then sounded the alarm at Disney, urging Disney to lodge a protest with THX about the Shrek trailer. Faced with pressure from Pixar and Disney, the scenario goes, THX backed out of its agreement with DreamWorks.

THX general manager Monica Dashwood said the decision to dump the Shrek trailer “had nothing to do with any other studios.” But she stopped short of denying that she had been contacted by Disney or Pixar about the matter.

A Pixar spokeswoman said her company was not aware of the Shrek trailer and did not register any complaints to THX, and a Disney spokeswoman did not return repeated calls requesting comment.

“It was just a business decision,” Dashwood said. “We usually do not have trailers tied to one release, and we thought it might be confusing to viewers about what we were promoting.”

But, Press countered, “at no point in the entire process did anybody suggest that doing this may be against their policy.”

THX has offered to reimburse DreamWorks for the costs racked up creating the trailer. DreamWorks has yet to respond to the offer.

Dashwood said the reimbursement offer is a good-faith gesture to the studio, and THX will “do what’s right in that regard.” As for why THX entered into the agreement in the first place, given that it would later claim “a change of policy” about creating a trailer tied to a specific film, Dashwood said, “Hindsight is a wonderful thing.”
